On occasion Redon would take up a noir he produced years earlier and entirely rework it, obscuring much of the noir beneath pastel. Yet he would often leave passages within the compositions that revealed the origins of these works. Salome, a pastel from around 1893 (Figure 9), exhibits a radical reworking of the underlying noir.
